Native animal species in Abruzzo
Abruzzo is a paradise for animal lovers, as it is home to some of the most fascinating animal species in Europe. In particular, the Appennine wolf, the Marsican brown bear and the golden eagle symbolise the wild and unspoilt nature of this region. These animals play a central role in the regional ecosystem and are also under special protection.
Appennine wolf - symbol of the wilderness
The Appennine wolf is a subspecies of the European grey wolf and one of the best-known animal species in Abruzzo. As a skilful hunter and pack animal, it has adapted perfectly to the harsh conditions of the mountain landscape. Its survival is a testament to the resilience of nature, but it is still endangered by habitat loss and human conflict.
- Habitat:
- The Appennine wolf is mainly found in the dense forests and mountainous regions of Abruzzo. It favours remote, inaccessible areas where it can find sufficient prey and protection.
- Features:
- With its grey-brown fur, strong build and a shoulder height of around 60-80 cm, the Appennine wolf looks imposing. Its keen senses are particularly striking, making it an efficient hunter.
- Nutrition:
- As a carnivore, the wolf mainly feeds on deer, wild boar and other smaller mammals. It plays an important role in the ecosystem as it helps to regulate the wild animal population.
- Special feature:
- The Appennine wolf symbolises the wilderness and freedom of Abruzzo. Conservation programmes are working hard to preserve its habitats in order to safeguard its population.
Martian brown bear - The gentle giant
The Marsi brown bear is one of the rarest subspecies of brown bear and is found exclusively in Abruzzo. Despite its size and strength, it is a shy animal that avoids contact with humans. Thanks to intensive conservation efforts, the last specimens have been saved from extinction.
- Habitat:
- The Marsi brown bear lives in the remote forests and mountainous regions of Abruzzo, particularly in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. These areas provide it with sufficient food and retreats.
- Features:
- The brown bear has a dense, brown to dark brown fur and a massive build. Male bears can weigh up to 200kg, while female bears are somewhat smaller and lighter.
- Nutrition:
- As an omnivore, the Mars brown bear feeds on plants, fruits, berries and occasionally insects or small animals. Its varied diet contributes to the dispersal of seeds and the health of ecosystems.
- Special feature:
- With only around 50 individuals, the Mars brown bear is highly endangered. Projects such as the Bear Conservation Initiative are working to minimise conflicts with humans and create new habitats.
Golden eagle - The king of the skies
The stone eagle is one of the most majestic birds of prey in the world and a highlight for every nature lover in Abruzzo. With its impressive wingspan and sharp gaze, it symbolises strength, freedom and the untouched nature of the region.
- Habitat:
- Golden eagles are at home in the mountainous regions and open landscapes of Abruzzo. They nest in rocky cliffs or high trees, from where they have a perfect view of their surroundings.
- Features:
- This bird of prey has dark brown plumage, a yellow beak and powerful claws. With a wingspan of up to 2.3 metres, it is one of the largest birds of prey in Europe.
- Nutrition:
- As a carnivore, the golden eagle mainly hunts small mammals such as hares, marmots and sometimes birds. It uses its enormous speed and strength to seize its prey from the air.
- Special feature:
- The golden eagle is not only an impressive sight, but also an important part of the ecosystem. As an apex predator, it helps to ensure a balance in wildlife populations.
Protection of native animal species
The conservation of these unique animal species requires the involvement of nature conservation projects that are active in Abruzzo. They safeguard the animals' habitats, promote peaceful coexistence between humans and nature and raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity.
